At Clehonger CofE Primary School, our curriculum is designed to be a “place of love” that fosters a “culture of aspiration and hope”. As a small, rural school, we provide a personalized journey for every child from pre-school through Year 6.
Our Values: The Heart of Our Curriculum
Our school vision, “Leading with Courage, Living with Love,” and our mission statement based on 2 Timothy 1:7 (“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control”) are the guiding lights for our curriculum. We place our Christian values at the heart of everything we do. These values relate directly to our curriculum by, for example, encouraging pupils to respect themselves, others, and their community while valuing diverse views and beliefs, modelling a “growth mindset” so pupils develop the strength of character to work hard and try new things or empowering pupils to take ownership of their learning and their actions as “good school citizens”.
What Our Curriculum Will Give Pupils
We aim to provide more than just academic success; we provide the substance of education by equipping children with both academic and personal skills for the future. Our curriculum ensures that:
- Pupils leave with secure, retained knowledge and transferable skills that enable them to thrive in the next stage of their education.
- Children are well-prepared for life in modern Britain, understanding democracy, the rule of law, and individual liberty.
- Pupils develop strong emotional and social skills, leaving Year 6 as confident, successful, and successful learners.
How We Engage Our Pupils
We believe children only succeed when they are happy and inspired. To engage our pupils, we offer:
- Memorable “WOW” Experiences: We enhance learning with residentials, author visits, sports tournaments, and “WOW” facts designed to make knowledge stick.
- Broad Enrichment: Beyond core subjects, we value and celebrate success in music (including Rocksteady), the arts, and a wide range of sports. House Teams Enrichment includes cookery, forest schools and community clubs.
How We Deliver the Curriculum
Our delivery is characterized by high expectations and evidence-based teaching methods. Key features of our delivery include:
- Sequential Planning: Coherently planned curriculum maps ensure that knowledge is built logically over time.
- The “I Do, We Do, You Do” Model: A structured teaching method used to scaffold learning and avoid overloading a child’s working memory.
- Knowledge Organisers: These visual aids highlight “3 Clehonger WOW facts” per unit, helping children focus on and remember essential information.
How We Assess Progress and Outcomes
Assessment at Clehonger is proportionate and used to inform the next steps in teaching. We monitor progress through:
- Retrieval Practice: Daily activities in core subjects—such as maths basic skills and phonics recall—to ensure long-term retention.
- Assessment Weeks: Three times a year, we conduct dedicated assessment weeks to track progress across both core and foundation subjects.
- Student Involvement: Children habituate self and peer assessment, giving them a clear understanding of their own performance and how to improve.
Assurance for Every Pupil
We are committed to meeting the needs of every child regardless of their starting point.
- Inclusion: As an inclusive school, we ensure that pupils with SEND learn the same ambitious curriculum as their peers through carefully adapted learning and scaffolding.
- Targeted Support: Our dedicated SENCO, ELSA Assistant, and Senior Mental Health Lead provide expert pastoral and academic support to remove barriers to learning.
- Quality First Teaching: Teachers are adept at responding to individual needs in every lesson, ensuring that all pupils—from the most disadvantaged to the more able—receive the appropriate level of challenge.
